Climate change is making air travel increasingly bumpy. Studies show that the skies are now up to 55% more turbulent than four decades ago, caused by shifting jet streams and warmer air. While turbulence rarely leads to fatalities, it is the main cause of non-fatal injuries for passengers and crew and costs airlines hundreds of millions annually.
To improve safety and comfort, Emirates uses AI, machine learning, pilot reports, and crowd-sourced data to predict turbulence in real time. The system provides pilots with live turbulence visualizations and has already significantly reduced unexpected encounters and severe incidents.
