OpenAI has released a new macOS desktop app for its AI coding tool Codex. The goal is to provide a tool that competes more strongly with Anthropic’s Claude Code, which already offers a corresponding desktop version. Codex includes a special interface for managing multiple coding agents across projects, executing tasks in parallel, and using features such as worktrees and reusable “skills.” This can significantly simplify complex workflows.
To increase acceptance, OpenAI is also doubling the usage limits for Codex on paid plans and offering access to Free and Go users for a limited time. This move is part of OpenAI’s strategy to expand its position in the AI code generation market and provide developers with more efficient tools.
