Germany’s IT Planning Council has made open-source cloud standards mandatory for the so-called “Deutschland Stack.” This is a shared digital infrastructure designed for public administration. The goal is to bring together federal, state, and local authorities on a unified platform and improve collaboration.
At the core is the Sovereign Cloud Stack, which relies on open, vendor-independent standards for cloud and container systems. This approach is intended to reduce dependence on individual providers and allow for more flexibility in switching vendors. At the same time, the initiative strengthens digital sovereignty and ensures more transparent, interoperable, and well-connected IT systems across government institutions.
