Anthropic has introduced the so-called Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a new technology designed to enable AI agents to safely control physical devices. Similar to its Model Context Protocol for software, MHS provides a standardized interface between AI models and laboratory or industrial equipment. This could include microscopes, lasers, cameras, robots, and entire production systems.
The goal is to enable AI agents to conduct complex, multi-step experiments and control multiple machines simultaneously. This could significantly accelerate research and manufacturing. Anthropic is initially testing MHS in laboratories and with manufacturers, with a strong focus on safety measures that limit what AI systems can do. Following further testing and evaluation, the company plans to make the standard available as an open-source project.
