Due to the misuse of AI and the resulting fake case-law citations, the British Bar Council is calling for urgent action. Following a High Court ruling, the Council highlights the serious risks posed by lawyers’ improper use of AI, especially large language models. This threatens the integrity of the justice system and public trust.
Legal professionals must demonstrate the highest levels of competence and integrity when working with new technologies. The Bar Council has already issued guidelines on the opportunities and risks of AI and is collaborating with the Bar Standards Board to create a joint working group for further training and support for lawyers.
