California has launched the nation’s first public AI job-loss tracker to monitor how much artificial intelligence is contributing to unemployment. The project was developed jointly by the California Policy Lab and the state Employment Development Department. The dashboard analyzes unemployment claims in occupations considered most vulnerable to AI.
So far, the data shows no statewide increase in unemployment linked to AI. However, modest rises have been observed among college graduates and in the San Francisco Bay Area. The tool will be updated monthly and is designed as an early warning system to help policymakers target retraining programs, job-search assistance, and other workforce support more effectively.
