Europe wants to reduce its dependence on US technology. But weaknesses in cloud infrastructure, identity management and public sector procurement make this difficult. One key risk is that US-controlled identity systems, cloud platforms and productivity tools could become political or economic pressure points.
European alternatives such as OVHcloud, Scaleway, Hetzner, IONOS and STACKIT already exist, but they cannot replace companies like AWS or Microsoft one-to-one. More promising paths include interoperability, open standards, coordinated procurement and targeted European solutions at every layer of the technology stack. Digital sovereignty requires political action, investment and long-term industry alignment.
