Europe is striving for digital sovereignty in order to reduce its heavy dependence on US technology. At the heart of the strategy is a so-called “EuroStack,” i.e., European alternatives to American providers of AI, cloud services, software, and hardware. This step was triggered by political tensions and the dominance of US companies such as AWS, Google, and Microsoft on the European market.
The EU wants to redirect investment into European technology, promote open-source solutions, and build a common infrastructure. At the same time, it aims to reduce the high energy costs that are slowing down European data centers. Cooperation between European companies and massive investment in AI and semiconductors are considered crucial.
