Google has placed four Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) into orbit as part of Project Suncatcher, testing whether AI computing could eventually be moved into space. The experimental satellite, developed jointly with Planet and launched by SpaceX, will examine how the chips perform under radiation and extreme temperature conditions.
Google believes solar panels in space could generate up to eight times more energy than on Earth because they have access to near-continuous sunlight. However, challenges remain, including cooling, radiation protection, networking, launch costs, and increasingly crowded orbits. The project aims to determine whether space-based data centers could eventually become an economically viable alternative to terrestrial data centers.
