As disinformation becomes increasingly sophisticated through generative AI, media and information literacy is more important than ever. A new report from the World Economic Forum introduces a holistic model that combines the disinformation lifecycle with a socio-ecological approach. Its goal is to enable targeted actions to combat misinformation at the individual, social, and institutional levels.
The model covers all stages – from the creation to the aftermath of false information – and highlights gaps in adult education, coordination, and policy. Media literacy now also includes AI, privacy, and digital skills, empowering people to critically analyze and evaluate content. A coordinated, society-wide approach is key to building lasting information resilience and protecting democratic discourse.
