Lawmakers in New York have introduced a proposal calling for a three-year halt on permits for building and operating new data centers. The move comes amid growing concerns over strain on the power grid, rising energy costs, and environmental impacts. The initiative is being led by Democrats such as Liz Krueger and Anna Kelles.

The goal is to give the state time to assess the energy, water, and environmental footprint of data centers and to develop stricter regulations. Similar pause proposals are emerging in other states. Critics warn that the boom in AI-powered data centers could heavily strain utilities and local communities.
