One year after its launch, Switzerland’s fully open AI model Apertus has surpassed four million downloads and is already finding a range of practical applications. The latest version, Apertus 1.5, improves areas including image understanding, reasoning, translation and multilingual discussions.

The model’s openness, transparency and strong focus on data protection have attracted interest from researchers, the public sector and businesses, including those in healthcare. However, Apertus still trails leading AI competitors in programming, mathematics, reasoning and agentic capabilities. Closing this gap will require significant computing resources and investment. Ultimately, success will depend not only on improving the model itself, but also on further developing the broader ecosystem built around it.
