The United Arab Emirates is developing frameworks to determine which government tasks can be handled by autonomous AI and which should remain under human control. More than 100 federal officials recently launched the strategic phase of a programme aimed at shifting half of the government’s services and tasks to agentic AI within two years.
The UAE has already approved AI tools for selected government services and plans to train 80,000 federal employees. The biggest challenge is determining who is responsible when autonomous systems make incorrect decisions. The classification frameworks could also serve as a model for other governments considering the large-scale deployment of AI.
