Berlin’s data protection commissioner, Meike Kamp, has called on Apple and Google to remove the Chinese AI app DeepSeek from their app stores in Germany. The reason: the app has failed to prove it complies with EU data protection regulations – especially regarding the handling of personal data transferred to China. Kamp emphasized that Chinese authorities have broad access to such data, which poses significant privacy risks.
Despite being asked to follow EU rules or withdraw the app from the market, DeepSeek has not responded. Italy had already banned the app earlier due to similar concerns. Apple and Google have yet to comment.
