Undersea cables, which carry more than 95% of global internet and data traffic, are becoming increasingly important for expanding AI and cloud infrastructures. Several tech giants, including Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, plan to invest nearly 13 billion U.S. dollars in new cable projects between 2025 and 2027. Compared to the previous three years, this represents almost a doubling of investment, aimed at strengthening global data center connectivity.
Projects such as Meta’s 50,000 km “Waterworth” and Amazon’s “Fastnet” highlight the growing demand for capacity. However, cable breaks, whether caused by accidents or sabotage, pose a serious risk. NATO and the U.S. are therefore tightening security and regulatory measures, particularly amid rising tensions with Russia and between China and Taiwan.
