The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded AI contracts worth up to $800 million to four major tech companies: Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Elon Musk’s xAI. Each company can receive up to $200 million in project funding. The goal is to expand the use of artificial intelligence in the military, intelligence operations, and government IT systems.
Instead of relying on a single provider, the Pentagon is encouraging competition to find the best solutions. Despite past controversies, xAI has already introduced a government-specific version of its AI system, Grok. The key challenge now: ensuring these powerful systems work together reliably – especially in such sensitive areas.
