The European Commission has charged Meta Platforms with a potential violation of EU antitrust rules. The issue stems from a policy change that came into effect in January, which blocks competing AI assistants from accessing WhatsApp’s Business API, effectively favoring Meta’s own AI over third-party chatbots.
To prevent “serious and irreparable harm” to competition during the ongoing investigation, Brussels is considering rare interim measures that could force Meta to temporarily restore third-party access. Meta denies the allegations, arguing that WhatsApp’s API is not a critical distribution channel for AI services.
