In Switzerland, there is ongoing debate about how the use of copyright-protected content by AI should be regulated. The specific cause for concern is journalists, artists and publishers accusing AI companies of data theft. Parliament is considering measures to prevent companies from scraping media content without permission, i.e. automatically reading and collecting data. The aim is to strike a balance between innovation and the protection of intellectual property.
An initial opt-in proposal was revised out of concern for damage to AI research and brought closer to the EU’s opt-out model. Legal experts continue to debate whether AI training violates copyright law. Media groups are calling for licensing, transparency and remuneration, while other experts are pushing for flexible laws so as not to stifle innovation or drive AI companies abroad.
