OpenAI and former Apple chief designer Jony Ive are reportedly working on a constantly active AI device designed for permanent availability and strong data protection. A prototype is already circulating internally, but it is unlikely that the ambitious vision will be fully realised in 2026. Unlike previous failures such as the AI Pin, the project combines extensive financial resources, OpenAI’s AI expertise and Ive’s design skills. Expectations are correspondingly high.
The device is intended to function as a proactive everyday companion with contextual understanding and a kind of memory. However, there are still major challenges, such as custom chips, local AI processing, energy efficiency and the transfer of cloud-based models to privacy-friendly consumer hardware.
