Munich-based startup Proxima Fusion has taken a monumental step toward clean energy by signing a memorandum of understanding with the Free State of Bavaria, RWE, and the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics. This groundbreaking partnership outlines a strategic roadmap to construct Europe’s first commercial fusion power plant.
The ambitious project will unfold in two phases, starting with the Alpha demonstration stellarator in Garching, slated for the 2030s. Designed to achieve net energy gain, Alpha will pave the way for Stellaris, a full-scale commercial fusion plant planned for the former Gundremmingen nuclear site. Supported by substantial public and private investments, this initiative promises to create thousands of jobs, reduce reliance on imported energy, and cement Germany’s position as a global leader in the rapidly advancing fusion technology sector.
