The EU plans to adjust the EU AI Act through a so-called “Omnibus” package. As part of this move, the deadlines for regulations affecting high-risk AI systems will be extended. Systems used in areas such as biometric identification, education, justice, or critical infrastructure will have more time to comply with the new requirements than originally planned. Standalone systems will now face a deadline of December 2027, while AI integrated into products must comply by August 2028.
The reason is that technical standards and practical implementation rules still need to be developed. At the same time, the EU Council wants to take stronger action against abusive deepfakes and plans to ban AI-generated images depicting child abuse or non-consensual sexual acts.
