At this year’s European Congress of Radiology in Vienna, experts presented a visionary outlook for radiology in 2050. It is expected to be heavily supported by artificial intelligence, while still guided by human expertise. Traditional images could be replaced by AI-generated 3D patient models that integrate diverse clinical data into a single virtual representation.
Radiologists would evolve into medical information specialists, combining AI insights from imaging, pathology, and lab results. Virtual patient twins could simulate treatment outcomes and support surgical planning. Despite these futuristic technologies, humans remain essential for interpreting, validating, and contextualizing AI findings in clinical practice.
