A new AI-powered surveillance system called “Kirmes,” developed by the Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and Services, is designed to detect spies and saboteurs in the Baltic Sea. The initiative comes in response to growing hybrid threats such as GPS interference, drone activity, and damage to undersea cables. The system has been tested in the Kiel Fjord.
Kirmes uses mobile sensors and real-time data analysis to identify unusual ship movements and anomalies more quickly than traditional methods. By linking multiple data sources, it helps close existing monitoring gaps and strengthens the protection of critical maritime infrastructure in an increasingly tense region.
