Artificial intelligence is increasingly capable of taking over more and more tasks. In response to this development, Bill Gates is calling for certain jobs to remain permanently reserved for humans. In a recently published, wide-ranging essay, the Microsoft co-founder argues that roles requiring empathy and personal interaction, particularly in healthcare, should be exclusively performed by people. He compares the idea to nature reserves, where society deliberately protects certain areas from development.

Gates also warns that governments are not prepared for AI’s far-reaching impact on employment, education, national security, healthcare, and other areas. He calls for international rules governing AI and stresses that greater cooperation between the US and China will be necessary.
